Whether you're hiring a car or van, you just need a clean driving licence that covers the vehicle you're hiring. Don't worry if you have points on your driving licence. You can still hire a car in the UK if you have six or less points. You must have held your driving licence for at least three years (or at least one year if you are hiring in the UK) and it must be from the country you live in. Please remember to bring your physical driving licence with you when you collect your vehicle (we don't access electronic licenses). If you're driving abroad, you and your additional driver will also need to bring your International Driving Permits. But in some countries, such as China, you can only drive if you have a Chinese driving licence.

Discover whether you need an International Driving Permit for your trip and how to apply on the gov.uk website.

We know that our customers hire vehicles for many different reasons, and have many different refueling needs. For your convenience, we offer 4 different refueling options:

– Bring Back Full If you bring the vehicle back full, or at the same level as the vehicle was picked up at, there won't be any charge. If there happens to be any missing fuel at the start, and it isn't the same as your rental agreement, please let one of our staff know or take a picture if you are in a hurry.

– Fuel Up Front This option allows you to purchase a full tank of fuel at a lower price per litre than our Pay on Return rates. You pay one flat fee for any amount of fuel, so try to return it as close to empty as you can to get the best value. If the vehicle is returned full, we do not charge you for Fuel Up Front.

– EZ Fuel If you drive for 75 miles (120 km) or less you can pre-pay a flat fee and we will take care of refuelling. If you choose to refuel yourself, please keep the receipt and present it when you return the vehicle.

– Pay On Return If you don’t have the time to refuel and haven’t taken Fuel Up Front, we can do it for you. Please keep in mind that this will incur a small fee. Want some more information?

You can pay for Fuel Up Front when you collect your hire vehicle. This simply means that you pay for a full tank of fuel upfront, saving you the hassle and time of refuelling before you return. This not only saves time but also money, because we offer a discounted rate compared to our fuel on return rates. If you choose Fuel Up Front but bring your hire vehicle back with a full tank, don’t worry, we won’t charge you for Fuel Up Front. But if you bring it back partly full, unfortunately we can’t provide a refund and you will be charged the full amount as listed on your rental agreement, so try to return the vehicle as close to empty as possible.

Very few insurance policies cover you to drive a hire car. Even if you can provide evidence that it does, unfortunately we won’t be able to reduce the amount you pay. This is because the rental agreement is between you and us, not us and your insurance company. Damage cover is included as standard with your rental. Should you have an accident, you will still need to pay a fixed (excess) fee – unless you choose to upgrade your cover. However, you could choose to claim this back through your insurance company. But bear in mind any excess fee you may have with your current insurance policy. We cannot guarantee whether rental procedures for UK customers hiring in the EU and EEA will change or remain the same. We will do our utmost to ensure that UK customers, like all our customers, will be able to hire vehicles at any of our thousands of global locations securely and with ease. Following leaving the EU on 31st of January the following changes may apply to UK customers:

  • UK drivers may need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in the EU and EEA.
  • Visitors with EU driving licences will not need an IDP to drive in the UK.
  • UK drivers may need a GB sticker on the vehicle even if the vehicle has a Euro-plate (a number plate displaying both the EU flag and a GB sign).
  • You may not need a GB sticker to drive outside the UK if the number plate features the GB sign, without the EU flag.

While the following will remain the same: Visitors with EU driving licences will not need an IDP to drive in the UK. Further information can be found here.

At the start of your rental, we will ask your card issuer to hold a sum of money for us. This is a temporary hold against the funds you have available on that card. We do not charge your card and no money is taken from your account. Your card issuer will usually present this authorisation hold as a pending transaction that reduces the money you have available to spend. Further detail of this authorisation hold (also referred to as a 'pre-authorisation') is set out in the Location Specific Terms and Conditions for the country in which you are renting.

The authorisation hold will be for the estimated cost of your rental less any amount that you have paid in advance, plus £200 (for rentals in the UK). When you complete your rental, and return the vehicle we will charge your card and the authorisation hold will be released by your card issuer. Depending on your card issuer, it can take up to 28 days before this is reflected in your account balance. As the authorisation hold has never been charged, the return of the funds will not be shown on your card statement. In case of any queries about the release of the authorisation hold please contact your card issuer. Please note – even though the hold is not an actual charge, it will temporarily reduce the available balance on your payment card.

Unfortunately, we are unable to fit the seat or arrange for it to be fitted for you. We are of course happy to provide guidelines on how you are able to fix the seat into the vehicle and manufacturers will generally provide guidelines on the seat as well. If your child is under the age of 12 or below 135cm, by law you must use an appropriate seat. This is to help protect your child in an accident, because normal seat belts are designed to fit adults in the stronger shoulder and hip areas. We offer many cars in different styles and sizes, so you can hire the perfect model for your journey. These cars belong to various groups, such as Group A or Group J.

Ordering cars into groups helps us provide a premium service, because there is never any confusion over the car you are hiring and whether you're eligible to drive it. Sometimes you're only eligible to hire cars from certain groups. For example, in the UK if you hire a car under the age of 25 you can choose from Group A (such as a Hyundai i10), Group B (such as a Ford Fiesta), Group C (such as a Seat Leon), Group E (such as Vauxhall Astra) or Group I (such as VW Golf Auto).

The car groups also help you understand useful information, such as the amount you pay (the excess) if you're involved in an accident, which can vary from group to group.

You can either pay for your vehicle when you book online, or when you collect your hire vehicle. If you choose to pay when you book online, we’ll dip/swipe your card to gain authorisation. If you choose to pay at the station, we’ll dip/swipe your card to gain authorisation for the estimated full hire cost (including extras) but won’t take payment until you return your vehicle. Please ensure that your payment contains both your full first and last name in order to the complete the check out. There are some useful extras, such as Fuel Up Front that you can't pay for until you collect your vehicle. These will of course still be reserved for you.

It's easy to use a money off or upgrade voucher on your next rental. Simply present the voucher at collection of your next hire car and we'll take care of the rest. Vouchers are valid at all participating rental locations worldwide (located on the voucher) for a period of 12 months from the date of issue and are pursuant to the terms listed on the vouchers themselves. If you are using a free upgrade coupon, please note than an advance reservation with an upgrade request is required. If you have any questions or need help having the vouchers applied, please give our reservations team a call at 0808 284 4444.

You don’t need to worry about paying for the Dartford Crossing as most of our vehicles from nearby locations are pre-registered with the Dartford Authority. This means that you do not need to do anything extra, we will take payment for the crossings from the payment card used on the rental.

It depends which car you hire, for how long, where and which extras you choose. We charge per 24 hours, so if you hire a car for 26 hours you'll pay for two days. Don't forget to review the terms and conditions when you book, which include everything you need to know ahead of your journey. Find your perfect hire car and see how much it will cost.

Of course, please feel free to bring your own child seats when you collect your hire vehicle. Just remember to bring all the fittings you need to securely attach it. Not all our vehicles have ISOFIX points, so please contact the location you're hiring from. We'll try our best to help. Alternatively simply reserve a child seat when you book your hire vehicle. You can also hire baby and infant booster seats. All our child seats meet the highest industry standards, because we understand how important your child's safety is. Remember, if your child is below the age of 12 or under 135cm, by law you must use an appropriate seat. This is to help protect your child in a collision because normal seat belts are designed to fit adults in the stronger shoulder and hip areas. Unfortunately normal seat belts support a child in the wrong place. Find out more about hiring child seats. If you have prepaid for your voucher directly with us, it's not a problem. You can still collect your hire car. Just be sure to bring all of the other required identification and documentation, including the credit card used to make your booking.

If it's a voucher from a travel agent or broker, however, we need to see it before you can drive your hire car away.

We always aim to provide the perfect model for your journey.

If you are unsatisfied with your choice, we will of course try to change it – depending on what’s available. If you collected it, simply return it to the hire station. Or if your vehicle was delivered, please call the number on the front of your rental agreement. If we do not have any alternative vehicles available in the category you have chosen, you can also request a paid upgrade to a different category.

We understand plans sometimes change and you might need to update your booking. Do bear in mind that the following information applies to all types of bookings we offer. If you extend your booking or update it with higher value services or a superior car group, you will need to pay the extra cost. If you downgrade your booking, we unfortunately can't refund the difference so please choose carefully. You can, however, use the difference against other products or services at the counter.

We understand it can be frustrating when you're surprised with extra costs. That's why we always try to be upfront about what you pay. Your booking typically includes Collision Damage Waiver (vehicle damage cover), vehicle theft cover, tax, location charges and, depending on the location car and rate, unlimited mileage. But unless you let us know, it does not include young driver charges, additional driver charges, fuel, upgraded cover, or optional extras such as additional equipment or out-of-hours services. Please bear in mind your booking fee will never include any parking or traffic violations. If you are unsure what your booking includes, please refer to your booking confirmation.

The excess is the amount you pay if something goes wrong during your journey, for example damage or theft of the vehicle. The amount you pay depends on the vehicle you hire, which country you hire it in and whether you choose to reduce the excess by upgrading your level of cover. When you hire a vehicle with us, you'll automatically receive third party, vehicle damage (Collision Damage Waiver) and vehicle theft cover to safeguard you on your journey. If you book on the US website you may find that vehicle damage and vehicle theft cover are not included, as some American credit cards provide insurance for car hire. Third party cover is the basic level you need to hire a vehicle – that's why we always include it. Should you damage another vehicle or passengers and their property, you won't have to pay for repairs or injuries. But, if you have an accident you will still need to pay a fixed excess fee – unless you upgrade your cover. Find out how much you pay depending on what you hire and where you hire it. We also offer Personal Accident Insurance in case you're injured in an accident, however this must be purchased at the counter.

Of course, you can take your hire car to a festival. However, as you are responsible for the vehicle during the rental period you will be liable if, for example, the car gets stuck in a field. You would need to arrange and pay for towing to get back on the road. Don't forget to review the terms and conditions when you book, which include everything you need to know ahead of your journey. In some countries however there can be restrictions applied to this topic. Please always check the location specific terms and conditions before you start your trip.

When you arrive at Heathrow Airport (see here for Terminal 5) and you have collected your luggage from the luggage reclaim we would ask that you call ahead for a shuttle bus and it will depart from our office to collect you from the terminal you arrived at and take you to our Avis Budget office at the airport. It can take approximately 10 to 15 minutes for the shuttle bus to reach the terminal you arrived at, dependent upon road traffic, hence the request to call in advance due to the current situation and environment.  Our buses do run on a schedule to each terminal 7 days a week between the times of 5:30am to 11:30pm daily, but by calling ahead we will be aware of your arrival. The number to call is 0208 754 7150.

Our new service saves you time at the counter, allowing you to speed up your rental collection by registering your details in advance so you can easily grab the keys and go.

To save even more time, register via WhatsApp and share your DVLA licence code before arriving at our UK rental stations (we only need this for UK residents renting in the UK).

It’s simple. Hit the book button online and fill in your details straight away.

Use the button on the booking confirmation page to get started. To complete QuickPass, we need a few details from you – so have your driving licence and payment card ready. Enter all your details, customise your rental and click done. It’s really that easy!

Don’t have your details to hand? Don’t sweat it. You'll have plenty chances to do this before your rental. If you forget, we’ll send an email reminder.

RSN is our Roadside Safety Net product. In addition to the standard breakdown assistance included with your rental, our Roadside Assistance Plus (or Premium Roadside Assistance) service covers any non-mechanical issue you may face. This product removes ancillary costs that may be associated with a vehicle breakdown, such as jump starts or towing fees. When selected, RSN will be included on your signed rental agreement at the beginning of your rental. It will be charged at the end of the rental along with any outstanding rental charges.

This will be charged to your payment card at the end of your rental along with any other rental charges. Unlike our other protection options, you won't be able to choose this ahead of time unless with Avis Inclusive, so please ask about it at the station when you arrive.
